Mr Dennis Tan Lip Fong asked the Minister for Sustainability and the Environment (a) how many vertical farms have been built in Singapore so far; and (b) how many of such farms are expected to operate by 2030.
Ms Grace Fu Hai Yien: The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) licenses farms for their farming activity and not on the type of farming system deployed. As such, SFA does not track vertical farms as a distinct category. Today, we have about 260 food farms in our agri-food ecosystem, and the progressive ones are increasingly harnessing technologies that are productive, innovative and sustainable. We also see a good pipeline of local farms that are developing and piloting urban food solutions.
